I first traveled to Brazil in 2008 when I was an undergraduate student, as a part of a Study Abroad experience in NC State University's College of Education, through Dr. Harriet Stubbs' Sci-Link Teacher to Teacher program. I re-joined the program for a second trip to Brazil the next summer as well. On those trips, I was able to visit four of Brazil's major ecological and cultural regions, including the cities of São Paulo, Brasilia, and Curitiba, as well as the Amazon rainforest and the Pantanal wetlands. I also discovered a love of Brazilian culture and the Portuguese language. Since my first experiences there, I have been studying, learning, and hoping to return to Brazil in the near future.
As I now am completing my graduate work in NCSU's New Literacies and Global Learning program, I am preparing for another journey to Brazil in the coming months. To prepare for this third trip, I have completed an Independent Study under Dr. Hiller Spires, in which I have been tasked to study the sociopolitical context of Brazilian education and to develop an instructional module to implement some of my learning with my students. The materials I have created can be found on this website.
