Crime Novel Preview-Review Videos
After you have finished reading the crime novel you chose for our class, you'll create a video review that 1) tells others about the book you read and why you chose it, 2) introduces them to the main story line (while avoiding spoilers), and 3) shares your personal opinion about the book and your experience reading it. For more details, read through this document that gives all the guidelines you need.
In addition to the more detailed guidelines, here's a basic outline of what you are expected to include in your video:
Part 1: Introduction (about 1-2 minutes)
Part 2: Story preview (about 2-3 minutes)
Part 3: Personal review (1-2 minutes)
In addition to the more detailed guidelines, here's a basic outline of what you are expected to include in your video:
Part 1: Introduction (about 1-2 minutes)
- Introduce yourself and the purpose of your video
- Identify the title and author of the book, as well as its publisher and publishing date.
- Is it a part of a series? If yes, what series? Where does this book fit into the series?
- In what format did you "read" the book? Did you read a traditionally printed book? Did you listen to an audiobook? (Abridged or unabridged?) Did you listen to a podcast? Maybe a different format format than these?
- How did you access the book? Did you borrow it from the school or public library? Did you buy it? Did you download a digital version online? What "marketplace" or online source did you get it from?
- How did you find the book? Why did you choose it? Was this recommended to you by someone? Was it on a list of recommendations you found online? What interested you about it that made you choose to read it?
- How/Why did you choose the format you used?
Part 2: Story preview (about 2-3 minutes)
- What is the basic premise/main storyline of the book?
- Who are the main characters?
- Without giving away the ending and avoiding spoilers, what are the major events or plot twists that keep the story interesting? (Your goal here is to get others interested in the story, in the same way you were before you started reading. Think about a movie trailer - What parts of the story can you show or preview to pique others' interest?)
- Why should others be interested in this book? Who might enjoy it most? Why do you think so?
Part 3: Personal review (1-2 minutes)
- What did you personally think about the book after you read? Did you enjoy it? Did you hate it? Why?
- What are the strengths of the book and its story? What about it might keep a person interested?
- What are the weaknesses of the book and its story? What about it might make you want to put it down?
- Would you like to read other books like this? (This is also a chance to talk about the format of the book and how you liked that as well... listening to an audiobook? listening to episodes of a podcast? reading short chapters?) Elaborate, and share your reasons.
- How does this reading assignment connect to your other experiences with reading? How did that possibly impact how you enjoyed or disliked the book?
