Mr. E's Goals:
The goal of Mr. Edwards' classroom is to help develop a generation of global citizens who are scientifically literate, who recognize and take action against social inequities in their local community, and who value the interconnectedness of their global community. Mr. Edwards works to accomplish this goal by motivating and engaging his students with inquiry-based learning, encouraging them to challenge established viewpoints with new perspectives and evidence-based claims, and producing collaborative products together that utilize dynamic resources and digital technologies.
Mr. E's Background and Education:
Josh Edwards is a native of Raleigh, NC, where he was born, raised, and educated. Growing up, Josh was always active in Performing Arts programs at his schools, his church, and in the community. Coming from a single-parent family with scarce resources, Josh maintained a job while he was in High School (which he still holds today!) working for the City of Raleigh's Parks and Recreation Department, Aquatics Division, teaching swimming lessons and lifeguard training courses.
After graduating from Raleigh's William G. Enloe High School (class of 2006), he attended North Carolina State University, where he was named a University Scholar and a University Ambassador. In the College of Education, Josh was named a Burroughs-Wellcome Fund Scholar and an American Chemical Society - Hach Corporation Chemistry Education Scholar. Josh had the opportunity to join NCSU Study Abroad programs in Thailand and Brazil, and discovered his love for US and international travel; he has since added other countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America to his passport. Josh graduated from NC State with honors in 2010, completing the University's Global Perspectives Certificate program, three minor programs, and two undergraduate Bachelor's programs, in Chemistry and Science Education. (This was all a huge surprise to anyone who knew Mr. E as a high school student, considering his lackluster performance and dedication... A special note to all of Mr. E's former teachers: He is so incredibly sorry he didn't work harder in your classes. Please know this - "Your work was not wasted and you made a gigantic impact on Josh as a student. Trust that Josh is certainly working to make it all up to you in his own classroom")
Josh didn't stay away from NC State long, even as he entered his own classroom as a professional teacher. Between 2010 and 2014, Josh worked toward a graduate program at NCSU's College of Education in Curriculum and Instruction; in May of 2014, Josh completed the New Literacies and Global Learning Master's program. (His individualized program focused on Multicultural and Social Justice Education in the context of 21st century teaching and learning theories. His graduate portfolio and summative "Creative Synthesis Project" can be viewed on this website.) In celebration of his graduation, Josh fulfilled one of his long-term goals of returning to Brazil for two-month of travels during the summer of 2014, where he continued developing his Brazilian Portuguese language skills.
Josh believes that learning is an life-long effort, especially for educators. He has continued his professional learning by attending numerous educational conferences around the US and South America. He regularly attends and presents at conferences of the National Science Teachers Association, International Baccalaurate, and the National Association for Multicultural Education.
Mr. E's Teaching Experience:
Josh began working for the Wake County Public School System in Raleigh, NC upon graduation in 2010. As a science teacher at Millbrook IB Magnet High School, Mr. Edwards has taught Chemistry and Earth and Environmental Science, as well as elective courses in Marine Science, Astronomy, and Forensic Science. At Millbrook, Mr. Edwards has served as a member of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme leadership team, the International Festival leadership team, and as a "Key Process Manager" for the MHS School Improvement team. (He is also the faculty adviser for several student organizations; Mr. Edwards enjoys mentoring students as they build more opportunities for community and collaboration with their peers.) Mr. Edwards regularly attends and presents at professional development workshops, including UNC World View seminars, International Baccalaureate science and coordinator workshops, and conferences hosted by the National Science Teachers Association. In 2013, Josh was recognized by the NCSU chapter of the Sigma Xi international professional honors fraternity with an award for Excellence in Science Teaching.
Mr. E's Current Projects:
For the past five years, Josh has been working to complete a graduate program at NCSU's College of Education in Curriculum and Instruction; in May of 2014, Josh completed the New Literacies and Global Learning Master's program. (His individualized program focused on Multicultural and Social Justice Education in the context of 21st century teaching and learning theories. In celebration of his graduation, Josh fulfilled one of his long-term goals of returning to Brazil for two-month of travels during the summer of 2014. Josh returned in mid-August with a renewed goal of learning to speak Brazilian Portuguese.
Currently, Mr. Edwards is working with a team of teachers and leaders in his school to implement sheltered instructional strategies in science classes for English Language Learners, design and launch the Millbrook Applied Sciences Career Academy, and to ensure that all MHS students feel safe and valued by combating the presence of anti-LGBTQ+A bullying and hatespeak in the school community. He is also busy planning a summer-long trip to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup: Go USA!
